A DIGITAL MEDIA PLATFORM BY AND FOR PEOPLE IN EXILE

Lakta is an independent, participatory digital media outlet, born in Calais, on the Franco-British border. It is structured as a non-profit association under the French 1901 law, free from editorial, political or commercial pressure. We choose not to rely on public funding as part of our economic model.

Our mission is simple: to create spaces where people in exile can express themselves freely and have their voices heard as widely as possible.

As a digital media outlet, Lakta uses social media and new forms of information as spaces to reach audiences beyond traditional media and explore new ways of telling and sharing stories.

Why focus on social media ?

Social media are now an important space for challenging existing power structures, where stories that are often absent from traditional media can emerge. Sharing the testimonies of people who are frequently portrayed by mainstream media allows those who live these realities to speak for themselves and reclaim their own narratives.

NEWSLETTER

Every two months, our newsletter will feature articles based on testimonies from people living in informal settlements.

We do not reduce a person to their suffering. Living conditions at the border must be told, but people on the move do not exist only in pain. The moments of life and hope have their place at Lakta. The editorial part is decided with and by people directly concerned. Consent and protection of the testimony are our priority.

OUR
ETHICS

Lakta is built by people with different backgrounds and skills, brought together by a shared commitment: to document what is happening at the border and make visible the voices of those who live there. Since the project began, more than 60 people living in the camps have trusted us and shared their stories with us.

Our team brings together experience in community and non-profit work, journalism, communications, advocacy and political science, as well as first-hand experience of exile and journalism. These different backgrounds come together to build a media outlet that is attentive to people, their stories, and the context in which they choose to speak. What we need today are people who believe in this project and want to help us make it a reality.

Lakta cannot be built without you.
